Rapid Package Prototyping

Rapid Package Prototyping Solutions

Validating Rapid Package Prototyping
An interview with Troy Edhlund, Managing Partner of JetComp

Corporate design departments are under siege, being dramatically downsized or
outsourced entirely. Package design consultancies are over proliferated and under differentiated.
Both are significantly challenged by ever-tightening budgets and timetables.

The most successful corporate design leaders and consultancies have embraced innovation to substantiate their value, attributing their design thinking to next-generation product development.

Innovation statistics prove that “speed to market” is the key to generating “first mover advantage” and driving long-term brand success. As a result, both leading CPG brand owners and elite design/innovation consultancies have brought rapid package prototyping in-house.

Troy Edhlund, Managing Partner of JetComp is at the forefront of this opportunity. He explains how JetComp works with both the brand owner’s production teams and elite design consultancies to build their own in-house innovation centers.

How does rapid package prototyping impact innovation?

The goal is to get the concepts out of the designer’s mind and onto a print accurate, digitally printed prototype as quickly and affordably as possible. But
this “need for speed” has caused some issues. Not vetting the proper digital printer with the proper print substrate and not having the proper color strategies can result in prototypes that appear significantly different than printed packages. The goal is to marry low-cost and high-speed with print-validated results. That’s what we do.

How do you do that?

We guide you in selecting the proper digital print technology that is best for your applications and utilize our specially created packaging substrates. This combination along with our support provides the designer with a color accurate workflow for creating next-generation packaging solutions with “speed-to-profit” cost and time efficiency.

Who can best benefit from this new rapid package innovation strategy?

The brands will see the most benefit immediately and ultimately the consumer.  By embracing this new technology both the design firms and their CPG clients will have the ability to explore a wider range of design concepts with less cost and time. Anyone can create a quick print on paper, but very few have the knowledge of how to accurately replicate print production on film. We help the design firms and in-house brand design teams print-validate their work accurately, swiftly and affordably.

How does JetComp drive this new goal?

We stay in touch with the latest packaging trends, materials, and print techniques.  As new materials and methods are introduced to the industry we implement them into our product line and share that knowledge with the design firms and corporate in-house design production facilities.

What differentiates JetComp from a comp house?

First and foremost, JetComp is the supplier to the comp houses, many are our clients. By having the capabilities of an in-house prototyping system, the designer can visualize the designs and make changes on the fly. No sending out and waiting days to see the result. Once the design is optimized, then send it to the comp house for the quantities needed for market research.

What is next?

JetComp has recently partnered with Epson and GMG to create a new industry standard for expanded color gamut prototyping and proofing for the flexible packaging industry.  This new partnership will bridge the gap between the design team, brand managers and premedia print operations by creating a color managed workflow that will carry color and design consistency through to print production.
